SmartStop 60/100 Crash Cushion

Crash cushions are mounted to the rear of motorway maintenance vehicles. As the name suggests, the crash cushion is designed to offer protection in the event of high speed collisions from approaching traffic.

Research shows that most damage to crash cushions occurs due to poor visibility.

The device is fundamentally designed to provide crash mitigation offering:

• Protection of vulnerable workforce in front of the impact – limiting the roll ahead distance of the works vehicle.
• Protection of occupants of the impacting vehicle.
• Minimal damage to the works vehicle – through significant reduction in impact stress.
• Prevention of any spillage of debris, or movement of vehicles or people minimising further accidents.

SmartStop has not only been designed with saving lives in mind, practicality is also key:

• The SmartStop's collapsible, lightweight frame is multifunctional, providing controlled crush behaviour and significant structural rigidity during everyday use.
• The optimum weight to performance ratio of honeycomb has been exploited in many scenarios. The total cushion weight is only 300kg, minimising the load to the works vehicle.
• The support frame is designed to easily withstand the movements of the crash cushion in its lowered position. Whilst developing the crash cushion, our calculations allowed for large amplitude vibrations and motion, which exceeded the basic requirements.
• The support frame has been designed and tested to withstand multiple impacts, making it reusable.
• The SmartStop is designed from modular components to allow partial replacement and repair in case of damage.

Design Features

Some of the key design features are described below:

• The barrier dissipates the crash energy gradually with a carefully designed energy absorption mechanism to minimize any forward shunt, and enhance the occupant safety during the incidents.
• The aluminium cladding is multifunctional:
  1. Protection
  2. Specific and Controlled Collapse
  3. Display and visibility - A lot of competitors products are more nimble and not as large or visible as our crash cushion.
  4. There are opportunities for advertising your company name.
  5. Structural by way of rigidity and provides self support normally, and during impact.
• Despite offering control and structural support, the system still allows the honeycomb elements to do the majority of work in absorbing the energy. This consequently enables a higher degree of consistency than less proven energy absorbing materials.
• The modular construction means only the damaged cartridge need be replaced following an impact. This is more cost effective than replacing the entire system and can save down time of the maintenance truck.
